First, you must begin a relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ.  Nothing else really matters or counts for much until you have first taken this step!
Let’s look at how a person can begin a relationship with God.  How can you have a new beginning?  In a single verse from the Bible we can discover God’s design for our lives.
A.  “For the WAGES of sin is death....”  Romans 6:23A
What do we mean by “wages?”  Wages are what you earn for work rendered.  It is what you deserve.  When a person sins, he is earning the “wages” of sin, he will receive what he deserves....and that is eternal death, separation from God.
B.  “For the wages of SIN is death....”
Secondly, we ask, “What is sin?”  Biblically, sin is more than doing wrong.  Sin is also an attitude we have toward God.  We have all broken the Ten Commandments, even if only the first one that says “You shall have no other gods before me....”  That is why the Bible says, “All have sinned....”

Romans 3:23

C. “For the wages of sin is DEATH…”
When we earn the wages of sin, we are separated from God and all that is good.  This is what the Bible means by “death,” a spiritual death and eternal separation from God.

D. “For... ALL have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
This picture illustrates man’s inevitable plight caused by sin in his life.  It is a hopeless condition of separation from God.

E. “BUT.. the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”

Romans 6:23b
The most important word in this verse of Scripture is “But.”  If I were to give you an ink pen for a gift, what would you have to do to earn it?  If it is a gift, you don’t have to do anything to earn it!  If eternal life were a wage offered by God, you would have to work for it.  However, it is a gift, there are no strings attached.  You only have to receive it.  It’s free!

F. “The GIFT of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

God sent Jesus into the world to die for our sins.  Jesus paid sin’s penalty for you.  You are now free to receive God’s gift of eternal life!

G.  “The gift OF GOD is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
This gift is from God, who loved us so much that He sent Jesus, the only one qualified to be our Savior, and because He had lived and died without sin.

H.  “The gift of God is ETERNAL LIFE in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
The gift Jesus offers to each of us is Eternal Life.

I.  “The gift of God is eternal life in CHRIST Jesus our Lord.”
Jesus suffered the penalty of death in our place.  He died so you could live. The debt we could not pay, He paid for us.

J.  “That if you CONFESS with your mouth, Jesus is Lord” (Romans 10:9).
There are two steps we must take to receive God’s gift of eternal life.  The first step is to “confess” or repent of your sins.  Repentance means to be sorry for your sins, and to be willing to ask God’s forgiveness, and, with God’s help, to turn away from sinful ways.

K.  “....and BELIEVE in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved”

Romans 10:9

The second step is to “believe” or to have “faith” in Christ.  Believing means putting all your trust for eternal life and forgiveness from sins in Christ Jesus alone!  Repentance and believing are the two human conditions every person must take to become a child of God.
“…no one comes to the Father except through Me”

John 14:6b

Jesus Christ is the only bridge to eternal life – not works, not keeping the Ten Commandments, not going to church, not being baptized, but trusting Christ alone for salvation from sin!
